Solid Body Bass Guitars

The solid body bass is known as the most popular since it is designed to sustain amplification longer than acoustic and semi-hollow models. This type of bass is most common in pop, rock and heavy metal music since it needs to be amplified and is often used with effects pedals. Many different types of wood are used for these instruments such as maple, mahogany and alder.

Acoustic Bass Guitars

The acoustic bass doesn’t soley rely on amplification due to its hollow wooden body, but acoustic-electric models can be amplified due to built-in pickup systems in the majority of acoustic bass models. These are somewhat similar to acoustic guitars, but on a slightly larger level. Most acoustic models come with four strings with six-string versions being popular in Mexican mariachi bands. The first models were introduced in the 1950s.

Fretless Bass Guitars

A fretted bass contains metal frets on the fingerboard which allows you to press the strings into the frets. Fretless models slightly soften the strings’ sound and enable you to slide easily from note to note as the strings are pressed directly onto the fingerboard. This gives the instrument a distinct and different sound which makes it popular in jazz music, but was first made popular by Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones.

Short Scale Bass Guitars

Short Scale basses are smaller models which features shorter distance between the nut and bridge. This type of bass will sometimes create a thicker tone due to heavier strings. There is less tension on the strings on a short scale model. In general, a short scale bass refers to a model which has a scale of 31 inches or less, making them lighter and more portable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bass Guitars

Every instrument has it’s own level of difficutly – some players take to them faster than others, however, every instrument takes time and patience to learn.

At some point being good at an instrument is subjective – it always depends on how you learn. It is always highly suggested that anyone interested in an instrument is to take lessons indefinitely. You might be surprised to know that some of the most iconic players of all time, (of all instruments) still take lessons as there is always something new to learn in all aspects of music. There is no completion and there is no finish line – music is an art form and is constantly being created as new.

As a musical instrument retailer, it will be easy to sound as though we are only looking out for the bottom line while answering this question. However, basically when it comes to choosing the best instrument, (bass, guitar, drum set, etc…) you should purchase the best one you feel comfortable purchasing. Not only are some instruments made from better materials, they are also under immense stress as there is about 150 – 200 pounds of pressure on the strings the strings. With a lower quality instrument, you could run into a few maintenance issues. One of which being focused on the neck in particular in which the string height could sit higher on the fretboard. This makes it considerably more difficult to press them against the fretboard to activate the note properly. This can also result in intense pain and repetitive stress problems later down the road. With a better quality instrument, the hardware and wood qualities are better which lead to better playing stability. It’s not that better quality instruments are without these issues – they just happen far less often with a mid-level or high-end instrument. If you do however run into issues with string height, tuning or any other stability issues, your local music retailer should have a repair department to help adjust or set up your instrument. If you’re local to us, feel free to bring the instrument in and we will happily have a look at it for you!
