Restring a Floyd Rose Equipped Guitar |
 |
In the instructions provided with
the origional Floyd Rose years ago instructed you to wind the string
as normal and then clip the ball ends off. Hmmm... here's a better
idea.
As you see in the picture on the left, try inserting the string
through the machine head and pulling the ball end through. Doing
this provides a secure connection at the head.

The whole principal of the Floyd
Rose system is to get rid of any friction that could place your
strings out of tune. It is achieved by clamping the string at both
ends; the nut, and the bridge.
Loosen the allen screw and remove
the pressure plate on the nut and feed the string under the breakover
post and over the nut in it's corresponding slot

 |
It is important to take this time
to inspect the pressure pads for grooves that may have developed.
If you notice any groves in the plate, they should be brought into
our shop and ground flat.
This is a two second job so we don't normally charge
for that. The breakover bar keeps the tension constant regardless
of the pad being on or off.

Now comes a common question: "How
much string do I cut off?"
By extending the string over the
bridge and cutting the string where it meets the fine tuner will
leave an appropriate amount to install it and achieve a couple of
windings at the machine head. Use good quality side cutters to acieve
a clean end.

 |
Place the end of the string in
front of the block in the string housing block and tighten the screw.
Many times a customer will bring in their Floyd Rose with a stripped
allen screw or a cracked string housing because of over tightening.
Finger tension is all you need to lock the string down. Replace
the pressure pad at the nut, but do not tighten it yet.
Before tuning
the strings, you must stretch the strings as described in the tech
section on this web site. Remember that as you tighten the strings
on a Floyd Rose equiped guitar, they must reach an equalibrium with
the springs before you can lock down the pressure pads on the nut.

Remember that as you tighten the
strings on a Floyd Rose equiped guitar, they must reach an equalibrium
with the springs before you can lock down the pressure pads on the
nut. To achieve this equalibrium, use a method of "cross tuning".
To cross tune, first tune the low "E", then the high "E",
then the "A", the "B", the "D", and
then the "G"; Repeat this tuning pattern until all strings
have reached desired pitch. Repeat this procedure until all the
strings retain their concert pitch. Carefully finger tighten the
screws with an Allen wrench using your right thumb and middle finger
